Ask Coach Rex

Your first session, where it happens and how to book it.

Getting started

Everybody starts somewhere, and most people who message Rex have never trained a day in their life. These are the things they ask before the first session.

About Getting started

This shelf is for the week before you train, not the week after. It covers what a first session actually looks like, where it happens, how long it takes before you feel any different, and how you get on Rex's calendar in the first place. Most of the people who message him have never trained anything. Some have not done anything physical in ten years. That is the normal starting point here, not the exception.

Start with the answer on the first session, then the one on booking. Those two cover most of what stops people. Everything else here is a detail you can sort out later: how often to train, whether to bring a friend or your partner, whether Rex will drive to your town. He works across ten Ventura County cities and the session comes to you, so the answer to that last one is usually yes.

What he says most often to a new person is that you do not get in shape first and then come train. You come train, and getting in shape happens on the way. There is no class to keep up with, no belt to be embarrassed about, nobody watching, and no sparring on day one. It is you, Rex, and a conversation about what you actually want out of this. If you do not know yet, say that. He has started people from there plenty of times.
