Grappling without the gi: guard, takedowns, submissions, tapping.
No-gi jiu-jitsu
No-gi is Rex's specialty and the thing most people know least about before they start. These answers explain the grappling side in plain language.
About No-gi jiu-jitsu
No-gi is grappling without the jacket. No collar to grip, no sleeves, nothing to hold on to but the person. It is Rex's specialty, and the first-generation Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt is the one he has held longest. This shelf explains the grappling side in plain language for anyone who has watched it on a screen and could not tell what was happening.
Start with gi versus no-gi, then guard, then tapping. Those three give you the vocabulary for everything else on the list. Tapping is the one people get wrong before they ever train: it is not losing, it is the word you use to say enough, and you will do it a few hundred times in your first year. That is the entire reason two people can go this hard and both drive home fine.
What Rex says most often about jiu-jitsu is that strength is what you reach for when your position is bad. Smaller people submit stronger people every day of the week, because position beats muscle and leverage does not care how much you bench. That is also why this is the part of martial arts that carries furthest into self-defense: most real trouble ends up close, and close is where this lives. You do not need to be flexible, athletic or twenty-five. You need somebody to show you where to put your hips.
