Ask Coach Rex

Space, flooring, garages, parks and what happens when it rains.

Training at your place

Every session right now happens where you are. These answers cover what makes a good space and what Rex does about the ones that aren't.

About Training at your place

The 817 E Thompson Blvd gym has closed and the new space is being built, so every session right now happens where you are. This shelf is the practical side of that: how much room you actually need, whether the garage works, what a park session looks like, what to do about flooring, and what happens when it rains.

The short version is that it takes less room than people expect. A garage with the car pulled out is plenty. So is a back yard, a patio, a living room with the coffee table pushed against the wall, or a park in Ventura, Camarillo or Simi Valley. Read the answers on space and flooring first, because those two decide what you can safely do on day one. Mats matter more for the grappling than for the striking, and Rex will tell you which of the two your space is built for.

He drives to ten Ventura County cities and the truck carries what the session needs. Neighbors are rarely the problem people expect, and apartments work more often than you would guess. If your space is genuinely wrong for what you want to train, he will say so and offer something better rather than let you get hurt on concrete. Send him a photo of the driveway and ask. He has almost certainly trained somebody somewhere worse.
