Can we train in my garage?
Yes, and it is the most common place sessions happen. A two-car garage with the cars out is plenty. Rex brings the mats.
Yes. The garage is the default. More sessions happen in Ventura County garages than anywhere else, and the reason is simple: it is private, it is out of the sun and the rain, and nobody can watch you be bad at something for the first month.
What makes a garage work:
- Cars out. Obvious, but plan for it. A two-car garage with both cars on the driveway is a real training space.
- A clear floor, and two feet past it. Bikes, the recycling, the paint cans on the shelf at elbow height.
- Head height. The door track, the opener motor, anything hanging from a joist. I will spot these, but look before I get there.
- Air. Concrete boxes get hot fast. Leave the door up a few feet, or all the way if you do not mind the street seeing.
- Light. One overhead bulb is not much at 7pm. A clip light fixes it.
The floor is concrete and concrete is unforgiving, which is exactly what the mats in the truck are for. Anything involving falling goes on mats or moves out to the grass.
Noise is worth a thought. Pad work is the loud part and it carries after dark in a dense neighborhood. See neighbors and noise.
A garage is also where people start building something of their own between sessions, and the usual first purchase is a bag. Worth waiting on, and worth checking what your joists and your walls can take before you drill anything. See whether to buy a heavy bag for home.
Weather barely touches a garage session, which is the other reason it is the default. Door down, mats out, and a wet January morning changes nothing. See what happens if it rains.
Renting? Check the lease says nothing stupid about what you can do in there. Everything else is just moving the bikes. Send me a photo when you message me.
