Self-defense & MMA in Ventura

Home turf. Rex has coached in Ventura since 2008, from Hostility MMA to the downtown gym on Thompson Blvd.

Ventura is where Rock N Roll Fight Company started. Rex taught at Hostility MMA, the city's first MMA gym, then ran his own rooms on the east side and downtown on Thompson Blvd for years.

While the new gym is being built, he trains Ventura clients where they are: a garage in Midtown, a backyard in Saticoy, the grass at the beach. Most sessions here are a short drive for him, so scheduling is easiest in Ventura.

The Avenue, Midtown, the east end past Victoria: Rex has trained people in all of it. Pierpont garages are narrow and that is fine, because you only need about a car length of floor. Midtown houses usually have a driveway and a strip of lawn out back, which is plenty for pads and takedown entries. Out toward Saticoy and Montalvo the lots get bigger and there is room to actually move.

Traffic here is the one thing that never really stops him. From downtown he can be at Arroyo Verde in ten minutes, at the harbor in ten, out past Victoria in fifteen. That is why Ventura gets the loosest slots on the calendar. An early session before work, a lunch hour in Midtown, an evening after the kids are down.

A lot of the people who train here already knew the gym. They came through Hostility, or the room on Thompson Blvd, or they watched Rex corner somebody at a local show. Now they text him and he pulls up. Bring water and clothes you can move in. He brings the rest.

Who Rex trains in Ventura

Former members of the Thompson Blvd gym picking it back up, downtown workers who want a lunch or after-work session, and parents in the east end looking for kids' sessions.

Why people in Ventura don't start, and how Rex fixes it

Home town, no excuses

  1. 01 · You don't know how Solved

The town he learned to coach in

Rex has taught in Ventura since 2008, first at Hostility MMA, then on his own floor on Thompson Blvd. You start at stance, posture and breathing. Every rep gets watched and fixed, and nobody spars until they ask to.

  2. 02 · You don't know where Solved

    He is already here

This is home base, so Ventura gets the most flexible schedule of anywhere. Ten minutes to Arroyo Verde, ten to the harbor, fifteen out past Victoria. Your Midtown garage, a Saticoy backyard, the grass near Surfers Point. Mats and pads come out of the truck.

  3. 03 · You can't tell who's real Solved

    Ask around downtown

Ventura is small enough to check a name. Three black belts, a pro debut at 42, and six fighters out of his room who reached The Ultimate Fighter and the UFC, Tony Ferguson among them. People here remember the gym.

Questions

Training in Ventura

Is the old downtown gym open?

No. The gym at 817 E Thompson Blvd has closed and a new space is being built. Until it opens, every session is private and Rex comes to you anywhere in Ventura.

Can we train down at the beach?

Yes. The grass along the Promenade near Surfers Point works, and so does Grant Park if you want the view instead. Sand is brutal on the legs and good for conditioning. Rex brings mats for anything that goes to the ground and keeps the session clear of the bike path.

I trained at Thompson Blvd years ago. Can I pick it back up?

Plenty of people have. You will be rusty and that is normal. Rex starts you on the basics you already own, finds what has gone soft, and rebuilds from there. Nobody spars until they ask to.
