Self-defense & MMA in Santa Paula
One-on-one boxing, MMA and self-defense in Santa Paula. Rex comes up the 126 to you, so no driving to Ventura for a class.
Santa Paula is a small town with a lot of heart and not many places to train. Getting to a gym usually means a drive down the 126, and after a long workday that drive is where good intentions go to die.
So Rex makes the drive instead. Sessions happen at your house, a park or a local hall, at a time that works around ranch hours, school and work.
It is only about twenty minutes up the 126 from Ventura, and it feels further because of what that drive does to an evening. You leave work at five, sit through Saticoy, get home at six, and the idea of driving back down for an hour of class dies right there on the couch. Everybody here knows that feeling.
Space works out fine either way. The newer houses out toward Limoneira come with garages and long driveways. Closer in, around Main Street and the older blocks, lots are tighter but there is almost always a yard, a carport or a garage that does the job. Up Ojai Road there is Las Piedras Park, and Steckel is a few minutes further north when you want shade and grass.
Work here runs on its own clock. Ranch hours start early, trades start early, and school pickup sits right in the middle of the day. Rex builds around it instead of asking you to. Early mornings book fast, and so do small groups: two or three friends or family who split a session and train together in one garage.
Who Rex trains in Santa Paula
Kids and teens who need somewhere to put their energy, agricultural and trade workers who want real conditioning, and small groups of friends who split sessions.
Why people in Santa Paula don't start, and how Rex fixes it
Three reasons, three answers
-
Start from nothing, honestly
Most people here have never set foot in a gym and are not about to pretend otherwise. Rex starts at stance and breathing, coaches every rep, and does not put anybody in front of a partner until they ask for it.
-
He drives the 126, not you
About twenty minutes up from Ventura. Your garage, your yard, a barn, the grass at Las Piedras Park or Steckel Park, or a hall with room to move. Early mornings suit the ranch and trade schedule, and that is when most people book.
-
Small town, checkable name
Three black belts, coaching since 2008, a pro debut at 42, and six fighters out of his room who reached The Ultimate Fighter and the UFC. Ask anybody in the county who has been around fighting for a while.
Questions
Training in Santa Paula
Can a few of us train together?
Yes. Small groups of two or three who train together are welcome. DM Rex on Instagram with how many people and he'll tell you how he'd run it.
We start work at five in the morning. Can you work around that?
Yes. Santa Paula runs on early hours and Rex schedules around them. Before the shift, after the shift, or a weekend morning. Tell him what your week looks like and he will find the slot that survives it.
My kid has energy to burn. Will this settle him down or wind him up?
Settle him down, going by the kids Rex has coached since 2008. A kid who learns to fight properly stops needing to prove it. Sessions are structure, effort and respect, and a tired kid is a calmer kid at the dinner table.
Rates are discussed personally with Coach Rex through Instagram direct message.
