Self-defense & MMA in Port Hueneme

Private MMA, no-gi and fitness sessions in Port Hueneme, near the base and the beach. Built around duty schedules.

Port Hueneme is a Navy town. Service members and their families move a lot, work odd hours and rarely get to settle into a gym before the next set of orders.

Private coaching travels with your schedule. Train at home or on the sand at Hueneme Beach, and pick back up after a deployment without losing your spot in a class.

The city is compact and most people live close enough to the water to feel it in the morning. A lot of the housing is apartments and townhouses, so the garage is either full or shared with somebody else. That is not a problem. Moranda Park has grass, Hueneme Beach Park has grass and sand, and plenty of complexes have a green strip or a fitness room that management will let you use.

It is about twenty minutes from Ventura, down the 101 and across Oxnard on Rose Avenue or Ventura Road. The drive has never been the hard part. The duty schedule is. Duty days, underway periods, a det that runs three weeks longer than anybody said it would. A class timetable cannot absorb that. A private coach can.

So sessions here move with you. Train hard for six weeks, disappear for two months, come back and start from where you actually are instead of the back of a beginner class. Spouses train while somebody is gone. Kids get sessions that do not depend on making a 6 pm class across town. When orders come, nothing you learned is wasted.

Why people in Port Hueneme don't start, and how Rex fixes it

Three barriers, handled

  1. 01 · You don't know how Solved

    Skills that survive a deployment

Rex teaches the basics so they stick: posture, grips, frames, and how to get back to your feet. Everything gets coached rep by rep, and you leave each session with drills you can run on your own when he is not standing there.

  2. 02 · You don't know where Solved

    Off base, on your schedule

About twenty minutes from Ventura. Rex does not have base access, so you meet him off base: your place, your complex's green space or gym, the grass at Moranda Park, or the sand and lawn at Hueneme Beach Park.

  3. 03 · You can't tell who's real Solved

    You have met enough instructors

Three black belts, first-generation Brazilian jiu-jitsu among them, coaching since 2008, a pro debut at 42, and six fighters who reached The Ultimate Fighter and the UFC. You already know the difference between that and a certificate on a wall.

Questions

Training in Port Hueneme

Can you train on the base?

Rex doesn't have base access. He'll meet you just off base: at your off-base home, the beach or a park nearby.

I deploy or go underway. Is it even worth starting?

Yes. Nothing you learn expires. Rex gives you drills you can run alone or with a buddy while you are gone, and when you get back you pick up from where you actually are rather than from the front of a beginner class.

I live in an apartment with no garage. Where would we train?

Your complex's fitness room or green space if management is fine with it, the grass at Moranda Park, or the lawn and sand at Hueneme Beach Park. Rex brings mats, pads and gloves. All you need is about a car length of clear ground.
