Since 2008: the Rock N Roll Fight Company story

How a no-gi coach from Ventura's first MMA gym opened his own room downtown, and why the name has a skull and a guitar in it.

Kickboxing pairs training inside the hexagon cage beside the heavy bags at the Ventura gym

Rock N Roll Fight Company opened in 2008. Before that, Coach Rex was teaching no-gi jiu-jitsu and MMA at Hostility MMA, the first MMA and fitness gym in Ventura. When that room split, two gyms came out of it: Knuckleheadz Boxing and this one. The short version of all of it lives in the gym’s history answer.

Full contact yoga.

The name is not a gimmick. Rex is a lifelong musician, a drummer, bassist and songwriter, and the gym has always run on the same energy as a show: loud, honest, and for everyone who walks in the door.

Three rooms, one cage

We have trained on Goodyear Avenue with a 26-foot cage, on Palma Drive, and most recently at 817 E Thompson Blvd in downtown Ventura. The hexagon cage, twelve heavy bags and the tire-wrapped uppercut bag came with us every time. The next room is being built now. Until it opens, Rex brings the pads to you.

What has not changed

  • No-gi jiu-jitsu is the specialty. If you are wondering what that even means, read gi or no-gi.
  • Kids, adults, women-only and fighters all train in the same room. Here is what you’ll learn, whichever one you are.
  • The first step is a conversation, not a contract. See how to book a session.

Fighters came out of those rooms too. Six of them reached The Ultimate Fighter and the UFC, and one of them is the reason people still ask about the gym: training El Cucuy.
