Kids & teens

What does a kids' session look like?

Movement and games to start, then two or three simple skills drilled properly, then something fun to finish. About an hour, at your house.

Loud, moving, and nothing like a lecture. I get them warm with movement and games, teach two or three simple things and drill them until they can do them right, then finish on something they enjoy so they want the next one.

The martial arts part is real, not a watered down version. Stance. Balance. How to fall without getting hurt and how to get back up. How to control somebody bigger than you. Pads for striking. Kids learn the same no-gi and Muay Thai basics adults do, scaled to them.

The other half is manners. Eyes up, say yes coach, shake hands, do not use this at school. I have been doing this long enough to be firm without being frightening, and I do not need to raise my voice to get it.

Two things about the way the hour is built.

The structure repeats on purpose. Same warm up, same style of drilling, same finish. Kids do better with a shape they recognise, and inside that shape the content changes every week so it never goes stale. They always know what is coming next, which takes the anxiety out of it.

Rounds stay short. Two or three minutes of work, a proper break, go again. Attention is the real limit with kids, not fitness.

Nobody spars. If a kid is heading toward competing, that is a separate conversation and it starts with you.

You are welcome to stay and watch, and with younger ones you probably should. Parents often end up joining in, which is how half the family sessions I run got started.

The discipline side worries some parents and reassures others, and whether learning to fight makes a kid more aggressive surprises most of them. Whether your child is ready is about temperament rather than age, and I will tell you straight: is your kid old enough. If your teen already plays a school sport, the same hour can be pointed at that instead. See training for a school sport and what happens on day one.
